Bo Johansson

Bo Johansson, nicknamed "Bosse", (born 28 November 1942) is a Swedish former football player and current football coach.

Johansson was a player for fourteen years with Kalmar FF and Lindsdals IF, though he did not win any trophies as a player. In 1977 he was appointed coach in his former club of Kalmar FF, a job he held for two years before switching to local rivals Öster IF. Here he would remain for three years, leading Öster IF to back-to-back Swedish Allsvenskan championships in 1980 and 1981. Bo Johansson went on to coach Norwegian club FK Jerv, Greek club Panionios NFC, and started an international career coaching the Iceland national team. He would have to wait 13 years for his next title, until he in 1994 coached Danish team Silkeborg IF to the national Danish Superliga championship.

In 1996 he was appointed Danish national team coach, taking over from Richard Møller Nielsen who had managed the Danish team to the 1992 European Championship (Euro 1992) title, but subsequently suffered lacklustre results. Bo Johansson presented a more offensive way of playing and he was successful in revitalising the Danish team, leading it to the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, which was to become one of the heights in Danish football. Despite a loss in the group stage to later tournament winners France, Denmark managed to go through to the final 16 where they put an attractive style of football on display, beating Nigeria 4-1 before losing out 2-3 in the quarter-final to the later silver medalists from Brazil.

Thomas Sorensen optimistic for World Cup

Thomas Sorensen says he is "as upbeat as I can be" about his chances of recovering in time to play for Denmark in the World Cup after dislocating his right elbow while playing for Stoke City against Chelsea on Sunday.

Doctors were able to reset the dislocation without surgery, boosting his hopes of making Denmark's World Cup opener against Holland in Johannesburg on 14 June. The 33-year-old has 86 caps for his country and played for them in the 2002 finals, when they were eliminated by England in the last 16.

"I am as upbeat as I can be in this situation – at least I am left with some hope of making the World Cup since the injury is not as bad as feared," Sorensen said. "I am glad that I don't have to have my elbow put back in place every day because I was in severe pain and I did wonder if my dream had been shattered.

"Fortunately, it was only a dislocation and there was no lasting damage when it was put back in place. It will be a race against time, but I do believe I can make it."

Sorensen was injured after Salomon Kalou jumped in to turn a loose ball into the net for Chelsea's second goal in their 7-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

"It was a reckless challenge," Sorensen said. "I know the ball was loose but the way he threw himself into the situation with studs up was not OK.

William Kvist

Born in Rønde in Jutland, Kvist started his football career as a five old in the local club Thorsager Rønde IF. Two years later he moved to Copenhagen where he started in KB, one of the two clubs behind F.C. Copenhagen. While at KB, he made his debut for the Danish youth national teams in November 2000 and played 4 matches at the 2002 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship.

As child he also played handball, and is therefore known for his very long throw-ins. As a youth player he achieved to win the Danish youth championship in both handball with FIF and football with KB within the same year. He was also the captain of both teams.

William was promoted to the first team in 2004. He debuted on 2005-04-23 against FC Nordsjælland where he replaced an injured Ole Tobiasen on the right back position. His first F.C. Copenhagen goal came on October 22, 2006 in a 3-0 win against Viborg FF, where he scored the last goal from long range.

Against Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Champions League 3rd qualification round 2006 it was Kvist's pass that deflected off Ajax-defender Thomas Vermaelen for an own-goal. This goal eventually sent F.C. Copenhagen through to the Champions League Group Stage.

In the season 2005-06, he often came in as substitute on mostly the left wing - a position he didn't enjoy playing. He has also played in defence and other midfield positions.

The Parken

On September 9, 1992, the rebuilt Idrætsparken, now called Parken, the biggest venue in Denmark with 42,000 seats, was opened with a 1–2 defeat by Germany. Parken has since been the sole stadium of the men's senior national team matches, with a contract on all men's senior matches until 2007. Meagre spectator support at some matches, which have attracted from 22,000 down to below 10,000 for the April 17, 2002 friendly 3–1 win over Israel, caused speculation that certain friendly matches might be moved to other stadiums around the country after 2007.

In 2006 Parken's 13-year monopoly on national team matches was broken, for a May 27, 2006 friendly game at NRGi Park, with World Cup 2006 participants Paraguay the opponent, almost 19,000 of the 22,227 tickets were sold within the first hour of sale.[13] The game was a big success, support-wise, and another game at a new venue followed on September 1 at Brøndby Stadium. However, this match only attracted 13,186 spectators (in a 26,000 capacity stadium) and was deemed a relative failure. The reasons are thought to be a combination of the poor, rainy weather, and the fact that this stadium is located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, and as such does not attract a new demographic, as the travel distances and times to Parken are not much greater, if not lesser, for most of the population.

Underdog Denmark sets sights on another upset at World Cup

Relishing the role of underdog, Denmark has an outstanding record in major championships over the last three decades.

The 1992 European champions have survived the first round in each of its last three World Cup appearances, and this year's tournament in South Africa could be No. 4. But first, the Danes will have to get through a group containing the Netherlands, Cameroon and Japan.

"The goal in South Africa is to get past the first round," Denmark coach Morten Olsen said. "The chances are there. But then again, Cameroon and Japan can say the same. We'll see. Good football always gives the best results."

Olsen hasn't yet picked his squad, but the pool of players doesn't include any of the top names in international soccer.

Feyenoord striker Jon Dahl Tomasson and Ajax winger Dennis Rommedahl are nearing the twilight of their careers. Still, they form the backbone of the team with Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen and Arsenal striker Niclas Bendtner.

Many experts didn't give the fairly low-profile squad much chance of making it to South Africa, but the Danes stunned both Portugal and Sweden to win their qualifying group. The team set the tone early with a 3-2 win in Portugal, and then beat Sweden twice to command the group all the way to the finish.

"The World Cup is very different from the qualification round, which stretches over a year and a half," Olsen said. "In South Africa, it only spans over four weeks and all players that I will pick must not have any injuries and be in their best shape. It is much more intense."

Denmark enters the tournament after having missed both the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship.

Denmark's golden moment in soccer history is the win over Germany in the 1992 European Championship final - a tournament it joined as a late replacement for war-torn Yugoslavia. It also upset Germany in the group stage of the 1986 World Cup.

In its last World Cup appearance in 2002, Denmark sent advanced ahead of defending champion France before losing to England in the second round.

Simon Kjær

FC Midtjylland

Kjær started playing football professionally with Danish side FC Midtjylland. In October 2007, Kjær attracted the likes of English Premier League sides Middlesbrough and Chelsea, being then named 2007 Danish under-19 talent of the year later in November. Real Madrid tried to sign Simon Kjær in August 2007, but their offer was refused by FC Midtjylland.

Kjær got his Palermo debut on 26 October 2008 as a half-time substitute against Fiorentina in Serie A. His performance won praise despite Palermo's 3-1 home defeat. He scored his first goal for Palermo in his third appearance on 2 November in a 3–0 win over Chievo. His excellent performances ensured him more first team football and a new contract with the Sicilian club.

He confirmed his reputation as first team regular also in the following 2009–10 season, where he formed a strong defensive partnership with fellow centre-back Cesare Bovo, also scoring twice in the first half of the season.

Daniel Agger: Key player at World Cup 2010

Despite his relative youth, Agger acquired a reputation for playing with great authority and class under Brondby captain Per Nielsen.

The Liverpool man is well-known to English forwards on his national duty; he terrorised them during a 4-1 friendly win for Denmark in 2005.

While at Brondy Agger was long linked to a transfer to a bigger club, and in the January 2006 transfer window, his £5.8 million transfer deal to Anfield made him the most expensive footballer sold abroad by a Danish club.

While Agger is in-and-out of the Liverpool team under Rafael Benítez he cuts an intimidating figure, exemplified by his "memento mori" tattoo.

Per Krøldrup

Born in Farsø, Krøldrup started his footballing career at Danish lower league club Aalborg Chang. He went on to play for B 93 Copenhagen in the secondary Danish 1st Division before transferring to Udinese in the Italian top-flight Serie A championship in 2001. At Udinese, he played alongside Danish national team player Martin Jørgensen, who claimed that Krøldrup was ready for the Danish national team in March 19. Krøldrup was not called up for the national team until February 2004, making his debut against Turkey. He was a part of the Danish squad for the 2004 European Championship, though he did not play any games at the tournament.

In June 2005, Krøldrup moved from Udinese to English club Everton FC for a transfer fee of £5million. Before having played a single game for the club, he suffered a groin injury and had to undergo surgery. He made his debut for Everton in a 0-4 defeat to Aston Villa, which was to be his only league game for the club. His Everton career was later described as one of the worst transfers in both English and Liverpudlian football, and Krøldrup has stated his difficulties of adapting to the physical aspects of the English game.

1986 FIFA World Cup

Denmark made their first World Cup appearance in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, and with the attacking duo of Michael Laudrup and Preben Elkjær the team surprised the world, sweeping the group, including a 6–1 thrashing of Uruguay. In the second round Denmark once again faced Spain, and once more Denmark lost out.

The team received a trashing of their own, losing 5–1, including four goals by Emilio Butragueño. The first Spanish goal was caused by a miss-timed backpass by Jesper Olsen to Butragueño, an unfortunate action subsequently coined as "a real Jesper Olsen" (en rigtig Jesper Olsen). The phrase would live on for 13 years when an identical backpass was carried out by Jesper Grønkjær to Filippo Inzaghi in Grønkjær's 1999 debut game.

Union is a success

Around 95% of Danish professional football players are members of the Football Players' Union. Despite the strong element of competition and obvious individual interests connected to this profession, the union is a success. This is the conclusion of a study, published in June 2001, of industrial relations in professional football. According to this analysis, the success of the union is due to its support for both the individual and collective needs of the players. Women professional players have recently been admitted to the union.

According to a new study of industrial relations in Danish professional football, the Danish Football Players' Union (Spillerforeningen) is a successful trade union with a very high membership rate, good contacts with private sponsors and considerable skill in navigating between the individual and collective needs of the players. The study, which is the first of its kind in a sector not often examined in an industrial relations context, was published in June 2001 by Kristian Nielsen of the Department of Sociology at the University of Copenhagen.

English trio guard slender Europa leads

Three English Premier League sides face tough away tests in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League round-of-32 matches this week as they look to protect precarious single-goal leads.

Liverpool, Everton and Fulham are all one goal up following the first matches of the competition's knockout phase and for the two Merseyside clubs this remains the last chance of winning silverware this season. Rafael Benitez's side take a 1-0 lead to Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni, David Moyes's men are 2-1 up as they play away at Sporting Lisbon and Roy Hodgson's Fulham meet the winners of the last ever UEFA Cup, Shakhtar Donetsk, with the London side also taking a 2-1 lead to Ukraine.

The Europa League is the rebranded successor to the trophy won by the Ukrainian side last year. It would be something of a consolation prize for Liverpool after their group-stage elimination from the UEFA Champions League, but Reds manager Benitez knows he needs to win a trophy to quell growing supporter unrest as his side trail 16 points behind Chelsea in the Premier League.

"When you win a European competition it is always very important," the Spaniard said. "If you cannot be in the Champions League, you have to do your best in this tournament and we would love to give a trophy to our fans. We want to do something important."

Olsen played a total 102 matches and scored four goals for the Danish national team from 1970 to 1989, and was named 1983 and 1986 Danish Player of the Year. He captained the Danish national team in 50 games during the 1980s, and represented Denmark at the 1984 European Championship, 1986 FIFA World Cup, and 1988 European Championship. The most Sccessful time period !

Olsen's reign of the Danish national team has been the most successful in the time of professional coaches. As of March 2006, Morten Olsen has a winning share of 58,7%, and with three points for a victory and one for a draw, Olsen has an average of 2,03 points per game. In comparison, Richard Møller Nielsen had a 54,8% winning share and a 1,89 point average, especially Olsen's attitude of taking every friendly match seriously has led to many good results, one notable example being a friendly 4–1 win over England in 2005, the worst loss for the English team since 1980 and a repetition of the impressive Danish 3–2 win on English ground at Old Trafford in 2003.

For the 2006 World Cup qualification, Denmark was paired with, among others, 2002 World Cup bronze winners Turkey and Euro 2004 champions Greece competing for only one guaranteed spot at the final tournament. Following a poor start of the qualification, Denmark were trailing both Turkey and surprise leaders Ukraine. Denmark needed Turkey to lose points in the final games in order for Denmark to clinch the 2nd place of the group and one last chance to qualify via two play-off games. Indeed, had Turkey lost points to Albania in their last game, Denmark would have gone through, but instead they had to settle for 3rd place in the group and a longer summer break.
After failing to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, coach Olsen considered leaving the job, having received several offers from club teams, but decided to stay and extended his contract until after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, spurred on by his and the team's popularity among the Danish population.

Sweden-Denmark: The callups

Coach Morten Olsen has selected the 23 players needed to make the swedes black and blue and yellow. Unfortunately there are a few key players that aren’t selected due to injuries, and some that have been selected that aren’t fully fit. Someone call up Dr. House, a witchdoctor or a freaking team bus to park in front of goal, because we’re not looking at first or second choices in defence – nope, cause that would have been too easy – we’re sending out a debutant to handle Zlatan. Why? Because everyone else is either injured, lost or dead! But more on that later…

Kim Christensen

Kim Christensen (born 16 July 1979 in Fredericia) is a Danish goalkeeper, currently playing for IFK Göteborg. He is known for his great skills with his feet, usually attributed to him playing as an outfield player, until the age of 18.

Christensen transferred from Danish side FC Nordsjælland to IFK Göteborg on 13 March 2008, as a replacement for the retired club legend Bengt Andersson, who had retired after the previous season. He made his debut on 22 March in the Swedish Cup final against Kalmar FF. IFK Göteborg won 3–1 and also the Swedish Cup. Christensen kept the number 1 spot for the entire 2008 season, playing every single minute in the league and was widely praised for his performances. Towards the end of the season, Christensen kept his opponents from scoring in six straight games, among others in the away game against the eventual champions Kalmar FF.

Supporters

Apart from the national team, Denmark is equally famous for its traveling fans, known as roligans. The movement emerged during the 1980s as the declared opposition to hooliganism. The goal of the roligan movement is calm, yet cheerful, support during the matches, as rolig means calm in the Danish language. The roligans have since developed an image of easy-going nature and rabid support, and are often considered amongst the world's best national team fans, along with the Tartan Army of Scotland. They were collectively given the FIFA FairPlay Award at the 1984 European Championships. Just before the 1986 World Cup, the roligan movement was organized in order to support the national team at the tournament.

The good reputation of the Danish supporters was sullied during a June 2, 2007 Euro 2008 qualifying game with Sweden, when an enraged Danish supporter invaded the pitch and attacked the referee following the expulsion of Christian Poulsen. The game was immediately abandoned and the supporter arrested.

Denmark team at World Cup 2010

The Coach: Morten Olsen (Danish, 60). Appointed: July 2000. WC experience: Player: 1986. Coach: 2002.

The Country: Denmark are in their fourth finals with Martin Olsen enjoying one of the most extended runs of any of the coaches in South Africa. The country’s vociferous and colourful fans, known as the 'roligans' will be a welcome addition to the finals.

Danish domestic football is enjoying a purple patch and that could explain how the Olsen-Banden, or the Olsen Gang, as they are affectionately known, did so well in qualifying. The Danes finished two points clear of Portugal, who they beat twice, and they will rely heavily on the likes of Thomas Sorensen, Lars Jacobsen and Nicklas Bendtner, who will fly the Premier League flag.

And in Olsen they have a positive leader. After qualifying he said: “Denmark will not be one of the favourites but if we have our best players available, which wasn't the case in the qualification phase, we can achieve a lot.”

That says much about the optimism of a nation that has reached their first major tournament since the 2004 European Championship courtesy, of a 1-0 win over Sweden in Copenhagen. Midfielder Jakob Poulsen's goal was enough to see off Sweden and ensure the Danes’ progression with one round of games remaining in Group One.

After failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals Olsen considered resigning, having received several offers from club teams, but decided to stay and extended his contract until after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, spurred on by his and the team's popularity among the Danish population. What a good decision that proved to be.

Telegraph verdict: A superb qualifying campaign, progressing from a tough group. The Danes don’t appear to have as strong a squad as in previous years but Bendtner has developed into a star for his country and any team that finishes above Sweden – so consistent – needs to be respected. Will be organised but lack strength in depth.
